Great Lakes Echo
In March 2009, what started as subscriber service that distributed links to the state’s top environmental news evolved into Great Lakes Echo, a news website featuring original reporting on environmental issues in the Great Lakes and the states and provinces that surround them.
Great Lakes Echo fosters and serves a news community defined by proximity to and interest in the environment of the Great Lakes watershed. Editor Dave Poulson and student and freelance reporters use traditional news reporting methods but also push the frontiers of journalism to harness the knowledge, interests, skills and energy of that community.
Echo’s recent accolades include four Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists Region 4:
- 2nd place, Best independent online student publication
- 3rd place, Online in-depth reporting: E. Pacheco B. McGaughey A. O’Dell, C. Morra, J. Spiro and B. Bienkowski, “City Recycling“
- 1st place, Online opinion and commentary: Alice Rossignol and Rachael Gleason for Great Lakes Smackdown
- 3rd place, Radio news reporting: Alice Rossignol, “Students clean up campus, honor mother Earth“
