Detroit High School Journalism Workshop
Through this workshop series, more than 1,000 high school journalists from 15 Detroit high schools have received training about environmental and health journalism since 2006. Most recently, students gathered in Dearborn, Mich., for “Cars, Cosmetics & Video Games: Journalism and the Environment,” for sessions on topics including cosmetics and health, clean cars, refineries and air pollution, video games and news, and pollution of the Rouge River.
Reporting on Climate change in East Africa
Knight Center faculty traveled to Tanzania and brought together climate change scientists, government representatives and reporters from Tanzania and Kenya to explore climate change topics, how it is affecting livelihoods and new techniques and skills for reporting about it.
Summit on Environmental Journalism
In the summer of 2010 the Knight Center brought together award-winning journalists and innovators to foster discussion new economic models to support quality environmental reporting. Speakers included Rob Davis, of the pioneering nonprofit online daily Voice of San Diego, and Brant Houston, the Knight Chair in Investigative & Enterprise Reporting at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
Environmental Journalism Boot Camp
Typically coordinated with the Society for Environmental Journalists national conference, the Knight Center’s Boot Camp series brings together instructors, scientists, journalists and others to discussed the relationship between scientists and reporters, social media, writing, covering chemical controversies, the Freedom of Information Act, computer-assisted reporting and other reporting techniques.
Great Lakes Environmental Journalism Training Institute
Hundreds of professional journalists have enrolled in GLEJTI to learn about some of the most critical environmental issues confronting the region. Sessions included skills for tackling new and old environmental reporting challenges: Video for the Web, computer-assisted data analysis, leveraging social media, the use of Soundslides and other journalistic techniques.
