Covering the Planet

Upcoming workshops & seminars

Rural farms, city streets, Michigan beaches

Hit the summer with a notebook of fresh story ideas.

This free workshop the afternoon of May 19 will help Michigan journalists and other communicators explain to the public a vexing summer story: What prompts health authorities to close beaches and what can be done about it?

Journalists don’t even need a beach in their circulation area to benefit from the story ideas, sources and databases involving a problem with roots throughout the state.

The event is offered by Michigan State University’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism.

Also invited are beach managers and others who communicate beach issues to the public. They can learn of the needs of journalists and explain why they can’t always give them what they want.

Here’s your chance to question experts on agricultural and urban water issues, find story ideas, develop new sources, learn of tutorials to further advance your understanding.

The cost is free, but slots are limited. To reserve one, give Barb Miller at MSU’s Knight Center for Environmental Journalism your name, organization and contact information. She’s at 517-432-1415 or email at mille384@msu.edu.
